In a sleepy village on the edge of the Aylesbury Vale, just minutes from Milton Keynes, the 16th-century Crooked Billet has been given a new lease of life by Greene King, who have had the foresight to let a talented chef and an experienced sommelier take the helm of this pretty thatched pub. Set in attractive gardens and with a tastefully refurbished interior, replete with original oak beams, open log fires, a modern feel to the bar, and a wine themed restaurant, the Crooked Billet has quickly established itself as dining destination of repute since re-opening its doors just over a year ago. The combination of ex-London chef Emma Sexton and John Gilchrist a, former UK Sommelier of the Year, has proved a great success, attracting discerning pub-goers from miles around for innovative, modern British food served in informal pub surroundings, and a sublime wine list, of which a staggering 250 are served by the glass. Well balanced weekly-changing menus make good use of first-rate local produce, including fresh seasonal herbs and vegetables from both the pub and neighbouring villager's gardens. Begin with fish soup, wild rabbit and leek terrine with spicy peach relish, or a plate of smoked salmon served with beetroot and horseradish cream. Formain course, either choose an interesting fish dish - brill with lobster mash, wilted spinach and red wine reduction, crispy sea bass with chorizo sausage - or try perhaps lamb fillet and black pudding with caramelised shallots and red wine jus, or calves liver and bacon with mash and onion gravy. Finish with a rich dark chocolate pot, caramel and praline cheesecake or cheese from Neal's Yard. Good value Sunday lunch menu - booking essential. |
